Each year, the Yukon Music Camp Society donates one free music class scholarship to each elementary school in Whitehorse to be awarded to an exceptional music student graduating Grade 7. The school’s music teacher is instructed to choose a dedicated youngster that has shown immense promise and dedication to their musical practice.

Each of these talented youngsters has shown immense promise and potential, garnering for themselves the opportunity to take advantage of free tuition from some of Canada’s top music educators at this year’s Yukon Summer Music Camp.

The purpose of this scholarship is to encourage graduating Grade 7 students to attend music camp, possibly learn a new instrument, and join the high school band the following year.

So far this program has been very successful and we have introduced both the joy of music camp and the sense of community and achievement of playing in a band to students who may otherwise have not had the opportunity.

Last year’s lucky students were: Zach Zimmerman - Whitehorse Elementary School; Sarah Knaack - Jack Hulland; Grayson Turner - Holy Family; Hannah Linklater - Selkirk Elementary School; Mikayla Power - Hidden Valley School; Echo Trociuk - Elijah Smith School; Justine Dumadag - Christ the King.

This year, so far, YMCS will be awarding free music tuition to: Kat Anderson - Holy Family School; Khurgan Lockington - Jack Hulland School; Torin Kramer - Golden Horm Elementary; Aidan Falkenberg - WES; and Lena Ho from Selkirk.

These lucky musicians can choose from over 40 different classes in jazz, rock, classical, folk, pop, band classes of all varieties, vocal, percussion, rhythm and more.

There are classes for kids, teens and adults, utilizing instrumentation with strings, skins, keys, reeds and even vocal chords! If it makes sound, Yukon Summer Music Camp likely has a class on how to play music with it.

There are no less than eleven professional musicians and music educators from Yukon and all across Canada prepping for a week of inspired, instrumental brilliance mentoring local musicians of all ages.

This year’s camp faculty boasts an impressive line-up of professional musicians from Yukon, Alberta and British Columbia. The incredible musicians and mentors this year include Jamai Moltzahn, Steve Jones, Karl Schwonik, Danette Readman, Robert Walsh, Bonnie Gregory, Annie Avery, Jon Heaton, Erica Mah, Scott Maynard and Steve Slade.

The Yukon Music Camp society has been running this inspiring, musically diverse camp for over 27 years.
