Huskies vs. Regals

In a AAA hockey series, the Whitehorse Huskies take on the Powell River Regals tonight and Saturday at the Takhini Arena. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m. both nights. Tickets are $12 at the door.

Wax and Wine

Take a free refresher course on the finer points of waxing cross-country skis while enjoying a glass of mulled wine. It starts 7 p.m. tonight in the Grey Mountain Room of the Mount McIntyre Recreation Centre. Hosted by Coast Mountain Sports.

Theatre

Five O’Clock Bells

Tonight at the Yukon Arts Centre, Pierre Brault reenacts the life and mysterious death of Winnipeg guitar legend Lenny Breau. The Ottawa Citizen calls the one-man show “spellbinding ... as finely executed as it is conceived. Don’t miss it.”

Show starts at 8 p.m. Tickets are $27 for adults, $17 for seniors and $5 for youth.

Firehall Films

The Yukon Film Society presents two documentaries tonight at the Old Fire Hall. Starting at 7 p.m., Warrendale chronicles seven weeks in the lives of a dozen emotionally disturbed children in a treatment centre that is the film’s namesake. The resulting film was acclaimed by critics but banned from television for 30 years, until TVOntario screened it in early 1997.

At 9 p.m., EMPz 4 Life shines a light on the lives of poor black men growing up in Toronto’s suburbs. Tickets $7 per show.

Gallery Re-opening

Yukon Artists at Work re-opens after a month-long hiatus with a new collection of paintings, pottery and other wares produced by the co-operative’s members. Featuring photographs of Sikkim and Bhutan by Rob McLure. Opening festivities start at 5 p.m. and go until 9 p.m.

A Night of Country

Saturday, listen to the country crooning of Prince George’s Mike Gouchie and renowned fingerpicking by Vancouver Island’s Ed Peekeekoot. Also featuring local acts Rising Sun and Teddy Anderson and a presentation of the Keish Elders Awards. Saturday at the Skookum Jim Friendship Centre.

Folk Coffee House

Hosted by the Folk Society of Whitehorse, featuring Maya Poirier. Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at the United Church. Tickets are $5.

Morgan Childs Quintet

Sunday, come listen to one of Canada’s finest young jazz drummers perform with his band. Morgan Childs, 28, grew up in Invermere, BC. Now 28, he’s been making waves in Vancouver’s jazz scene. Show starts at 7:30 p.m. at the Yukon Arts Centre. Tickets are $22 for adults, $17 for seniors and $5 for children under 12.

Pecha Kucha Night

Pecha Kucha is Japanese for chit-chat. The word has come to describe a public event in which performers make quick, zippy presentations on a subject of their choice. Time limits are strict: each performer has 20 slides, and is only able to spend 20 seconds per frame. Total time: 6 minutes, 40 seconds.

Saturday at the Old Fire Hall. Tickets are $12 at the door. Doors at 7:30 p.m. Featuring Square Wave Jazz Trio. Show starts at 8:20 p.m. sharp. (See story on page 45.)

Friends of Haiti

Monday, Friends of Haiti meets for their third meeting in the Whitehorse Public Library from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. to discuss how to help the earthquake-ravaged country. “Bring your expertise, your ideas, and your heartfelt desire to help Haitians through the difficult months and years ahead,” organizers ask. “Please join us to support ongoing efforts and to start up new ones.”
