Canadian comedic pair kick off the holidays in Whitehorse

D.J. Demer and Jon Gagnon take the stage at the Yukon Inn’s Boiler Room Dec. 15 and 16.

Whether he’s stopping in to chat with Jimmy Fallon or Conan O’Brien, competing on America’s Got Talent or starring in his latest CBC sitcom, One More Time, multi-talented Canadian comedian D.J. Demers is bound to have you laughing within the first minutes he steps on stage.

Whitehorse comedy fans are in for a treat as DJ Demers shares the night with Jon Gagnon performing live on Dec. 15 and 16, from 7 to 9:30 p.m. in the Boiler Room at the Yukon Inn.

The Kitchener native got his start performing comedy during his second year of university, making his first comedy club appearance at Yuk Yuk’s. Demers went on to win the 2013 Toronto Comedy Brawl, Homegrown Comics Competition at the Just for Laughs Festival in 2014, and a Canadian Comedy Award for Best Breakout Artist in 2015.

Embracing his hearing loss through comedy, Demers’ performance will feature a sign language interpreter to show support for the deaf community that are loyal fans of his humour.

Joining him under the spotlight on Dec. 15 will be award-winning screenwriter, cartoonist and founder of the Underground Comedy Club, Jon Gagnon. With a knack for both shorter and longer, storytelling-style jokes, Gagnon’s talent touches on diverse topics, including thought-provoking humour about society, love and relationships with a hint of dark humour.

In recent years, Gagnon has honed his craft as the writer and creator of the animation series Stickman, while also appearing as host of the Canadian late night talk show This Month Tonight.

Yukon host and producer Stephen McGovern is excited to have two veteran comedians take the stage and show support for local comedy in Whitehorse.

“Usually I’ll have one headliner and then a local comic. This time, it’s going to be fun to have two great headliners on the show. I’m hoping it will be a fun Christmas event for people. If you’d rather not embarrass yourself at a staff party, you can enjoy our show instead,” McGovern says with a laugh. “Bring some friends out and it will feel like a great way to kick off the holiday season.”
